An Introduction to Diagnosis and Treatment
meredith charney, Ph.D.
Meredith Charney, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist who relocated to Maine in September 2018 and joined Psychology Specialists of Maine. Prior to her move, she worked for 7 years as a clinical psychologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the Center for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Disorders (CATSD), the Complicated Grief Program, and the Home Base Program. From 2016 until her departure, she served as the Director of Psychotherapy and Training for CATSD. Dr. Charney specializes in the provision of and training in evidence-based treatments for complicated grief, trauma/PTSD, and anxiety. She has spoken at the local and national level on traumatic stress and complicated grief.
Although the experience of grief and loss is universal, individuals can cope with the experience in a range of ways. Some feel they are, with time, able to accept the loss and progress in life. Others, however, can feel stuck and suffer greatly leading to the development of complicated grief. Complicated grief (CG) is a disorder that is growing in understanding and study. In addition, complicated grief therapy (CGT) has shown great promise in successfully alleviating symptoms of prolonged, intense grief.
This workshop will introduce participants to the symptoms and course of complicated grief as well as the CGT model and components of treatment. Attendees will leave this training with a basic understanding of CG and CGT and specific skills they can employ in their care of patients with grief.
Assess for CG and implement components of CGT in their clinical practice:
1. Summarize the typical presentation of CG.
2. Summarize the core components of CGT including: understanding grief, managing emotional pain, thinking about the future, strengthening relationships, telling the story of the death, living with reminders, and connecting with reminders.
3. Learn how to assess for complicated grief.
4. Learn how to incorporate components of CGT into current clinical practice.
