Family Therapy in Maine

Helping Families Reconnect, Communicate, and Heal

Families can be our greatest source of support—and our greatest source of stress.

When conflict becomes chronic, communication breaks down, or family members begin feeling misunderstood, disconnected, or hurt, even the strongest families can find themselves stuck in painful patterns.

Family therapy provides a structured, supportive space to understand what's happening beneath the conflict, strengthen relationships, and create new ways of connecting.

At Psychology Specialists of Maine, our family therapists help families move beyond blame and frustration to rebuild trust, improve communication, and restore emotional connection.

Available in Portland, Bangor, and throughout Maine via Telehealth.

When Should a Family Consider Therapy?

Many families wait until problems have become overwhelming before seeking help. Family therapy can be beneficial whenever family relationships are causing significant stress, conflict, or emotional distance.

Common reasons families seek therapy include:

  • Parent-teen conflict

  • Adult child and parent relationship difficulties

  • Blended family challenges

  • Divorce and co-parenting transitions

  • Sibling conflict

  • Communication breakdowns

  • Family stress related to ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns

  • Grief and loss

  • Major life transitions

  • Caregiving challenges

  • Estrangement and relationship repair

  • Ongoing family tension that never seems to resolve

Family therapy is not about determining who is right or wrong. Instead, we help families understand the patterns that keep them stuck and develop healthier ways of relating to one another.

Who Can Participate?

Families come in many forms.

We work with:

  • Parents and children

  • Parents and adolescents

  • Adult children and parents

  • Siblings

  • Blended families and stepfamilies

  • Multi-generational families

  • Grandparents and caregivers

  • Chosen families and other important family relationships

Not every family member needs to participate in every session. Your therapist will work with you to determine the most effective approach for your unique situation.

Our Approach to Family Therapy

Our therapists are trained in evidence-based family therapy approaches, including Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), which focuses on strengthening emotional bonds, increasing understanding, and creating greater security within family relationships. The goal is not simply to improve communication, but to help family members feel heard, understood, and emotionally connected.

Rather than focusing on blame, we help families identify the negative interaction cycles that create conflict and distance. Together, we work to create new patterns built on trust, responsiveness, and emotional safety.

Our therapists understand that family conflict often develops despite genuine love and good intentions. Family therapy creates an opportunity to slow down, understand one another more deeply, and begin repairing important relationships.

Why Choose Psychology Specialists of Maine?

Unlike many practices that offer family therapy as a general service, our family therapists have advanced training in working with complex family systems and relationship dynamics.

Families often seek us out when:

  • Previous attempts to resolve problems have not worked

  • The stakes feel too important to leave unaddressed

  • Communication has become highly emotional or difficult

  • They want experienced, specialized care

  • They are looking for a private-pay therapy experience focused on quality and expertise

Our goal is to help families move from conflict and disconnection toward greater understanding, resilience, and lasting connection.

Insurance and Fees

Psychology Specialists of Maine does not participate with insurance plans for family therapy because we engage the family as the client, not an identified patient being treated for a diagnosis. Many families choose private-pay therapy because it offers greater privacy, flexibility, and access to highly specialized clinicians without insurance restrictions.
