DBT: A Clinical Primer

DBT: A Clinical Primer

$65.00

This 3-hour online course includes 3 CE credits for Maine licensed psychologists, social workers (LCSW) and counselors (LCPC). Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a therapy approach initially designed for working with clients with a longstanding history of self-harm who had previously been considered “treatment-resistant”. In the decades since its inception, founder Marsha Linehan and her colleagues have broadened DBT’s application to include a range of diagnoses, such as personality disorders, persistent mood disorders, substance use disorders, and eating disorders. This work has proven the effectiveness of this approach for treating a range of difficulties based in chronic emotion dysregulation. In this workshop, attendees will learn about DBT as a theoretical framework and as a repertoire of effective skills for managing long-term emotional difficulties. Additional focus will include an integrative approach to incorporating these skills into existing theoretical frameworks.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify the central tenets of DBT as they apply to case conceptualization when working with clients with chronic emotional dysregulation.

2. Describe core DBT principles and how they relate to mechanisms of change from this theoretical approach.

3. Describe the overarching structure of DBT-based treatment including the skill domains and representative skills associated with each.

4. Compare and contrast DBT with other major theoretical approaches to psychotherapy and integrate DBT principles into these models.

5. Incorporate DBT-based interventions into their clinical practice.

About the Presenter

Kate White, Ph.D. Kate White’s interest in emotion dysregulation began as a student in psychology at Colby College and has been a point of continuity throughout her clinical and research path. She earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the Pennsylvania State University and completed a pre-doctoral internship with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Psychiatry. Following a two-year post-doctoral internship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison investigating a sleep-based intervention to reduce suicidal ideation in depressed individuals with insomnia, Kate moved back to Maine to teach in the Department of Psychology at Bates College for three years. She has been working with Psychology Specialists of Maine as a licensed psychologist and Director of Training and Staff Development since 2016.

Kate began working from a DBT model during her pre-doctoral internship as a co-leader of DBT skills groups. The DBT approach provided a useful skills-based addition to her generally integrative-psychodynamic approach to working with clients experiencing chronic emotion dysregulation and personality disorders. Kate went on to develop and implement new DBT programs at a community mental health clinic in Madison, WI and then at Psychology Specialists of Maine in Brunswick, ME. She currently offers two weekly DBT skills training groups and integrates skills training into her individual work with clients.
